Large Blow Down cleared at Edmunds Woods

Thanks to Marie-Anne Faissler who alerted the Trail Committee about a large red oak that fell down across the Edmund Hill Trail in the Edmund Hill Woods area. This oak is over 2 feet in diameter and in the process of falling took three other trees with it. Fortunately, the NTC recently purchased a long chainsaw bar (28 inches). I needed every inch of this bar to saw through the log. The trail is now cleared and there's a bunch of wood stacked up all around there.

On my way back to the Rice Ave parking lot, I sawed a few logs lengthwise in the muddy area before the Proctor Trail splits off from the Edmund Hill Trail. I wasn't happy with my previous attempt to span the mud, and now with the sawed-in-half logs, I'm a little happier with it, but it can still be better. Suggestions, ideas, etc. are welcome.

Cold Harbor Trail

Go check out the new installation on the Cold Harbor trail. Eagle Scout candidate Greg Farrell (working with NTC sponsor Charlie Bradley) initiated a project to replace the plank-style bridges that went through the swampy meadow section preceding Cherry St. with a 3-foot wide elevated boardwalk.

Greg rallied a bunch of friends and NTC members Jim Stein, Forest Lyford, Charlie Bradley (plus honorary member Rob) and myself were on hand to move the ~400 pound sections of boardwalk, place cinder blocks in the 2 foot deep mud, bridge the gaps with 6x6 landscape timbers and nail it all together before the whistle blew at 5:00 p.m.

We even managed to wolf down a half dozen Monty's pizzas courtesy of Greg's Dad during a 20 minute lunch break.

Thanks to all who helped!

Watson Park

I did some work at Watson Park today (9/11) before the rain came in. One of the problems I found with the trail was that it wasn't very clear where the trail entrance was in the section behind the Water Supply building, so I flagged that better and also got the brush trimmer and trimmed the grass at the entrance. There was a tree down in the woods a bit, so I cleared that. I also trimmed the grass through the meadow so it's easier to walk through.
